In May 1943, Zamperini's plane, a B-24 bomber, crashed into the Pacific Ocean while on a mission to Hawaii. He was one of only three survivors of the crash, which killed eight of his crew members. Zamperini and his fellow survivors, Russell Allen "Phil" Phillips and Francis "Mac" McNulty, were left adrift in the ocean with minimal supplies.
