The Monkey King 2 takes place after the events of the first film. Sun Wukong (played by Wu Ergao), the mischievous and powerful Monkey King, is tasked with protecting the monk Xuanzang (played by Takeshi Kaneshiro) on his journey to India to retrieve Buddhist scriptures. Along the way, they encounter various challenges and adversaries, including the evil demon lord, Erlang Shen (played by Donnie Yen).
