Lakshmi was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, to a Tamil Brahmin family. She began her acting career as a child artist and later transitioned to leading roles. Her early films include (1971) and Pallu Padama Paathuka (1973). Her breakthrough performance came with the 1975 film Udhayam NH4 , which catapulted her to stardom.
