The stepmother character—reimagined with added vulnerabilities and moral ambiguity—feels more three-dimensional. Returning cast members display a deepened rapport; new additions inject friction without flattening existing dynamics. Standout performances come from actors who resist caricature: the biological parent who alternates between defensiveness and genuine fear of losing influence, and the children whose loyalties evolve realistically across the story. The film’s willingness to portray adults as imperfect but capable of change is one of its strengths.
