The film follows Lou, a struggling man who loses his job at a salvage yard and becomes fascinated with the world of nightcrawlers - freelance videographers who capture footage of accidents, crimes, and other disasters for local news stations. Lou sees an opportunity to make a profit from this world and begins to build his own team, including a young woman named Nina (Rene Russo) and a rookie nightcrawler named Joe (Bill Paxton).
