The film tells the story of Massoud (played by Golshifteh Farahani), a young woman who is forced to marry a Taliban fighter, Hamid (played by Hassan Pourshirazi), while her husband, Amir (played by Saïd Taghmaoui), is presumed dead. As Massoud navigates her new life with Hamid, she begins to realize the harsh realities of her situation and the limitations placed on her as a woman in a war-torn country.
