V. Ethics of Patching and Preservation The modifier “fixed” can mean many things: bug-fixes, security patches, localization, or removal of DRM. From an ethical stance, community patches can be morally defensible when they revive abandoned art or restore usability without misappropriating credit or monetization. Conversely, stripping protections to enable unauthorized distribution undermines creators’ control and potential livelihood. Ideally, preservation efforts should prioritize transparent attribution, seek permission when possible, and, where feasible, route benefits back to original makers.
