The idea of a national health insurance scheme was first conceived in 2006, but it wasn't until 2018 that the program was officially launched. The scheme was designed to provide a health insurance cover of ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization. The primary objective was to cover over 10 crore poor and vulnerable families, providing them with financial protection against health-related expenses.
